This is the definitive Kenyan safari. This 5-day journey combines the two most iconic destinations in the country: Amboseli and the Maasai Mara. You’ll begin under the shadow of the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro, home to some of the largest elephant herds in Africa.
After experiencing the Great Rift Valley at Lake Naivasha, you’ll travel to the legendary plains of the Maasai Mara, the world-renowned stage for the Great Migration and home to an incredible concentration of lions, cheetahs, and other predators. It’s a journey of breathtaking contrasts, from snow-capped peaks to tranquil lakes and endless golden grasslands.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 01: Nairobi to Amboseli – The Land of Giants
Your epic safari begins with a scenic drive from Nairobi, heading south towards the Tanzanian border. You’ll arrive at Amboseli National Park with the iconic, snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro rising majestically from the plains.
- Morning: Depart from Nairobi and travel south, watching the city fade into the savanna.
- Lunch: Arrive at your safari lodge or camp in Amboseli in time for a hearty lunch.
- Afternoon: Embark on your first game drive in Amboseli. This is the best place in the world to get up close to free-ranging elephants, often moving in large, matriarchal herds against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro.
- Evening: Return to your accommodation for dinner and rest, with the sounds of the African bush all around you.
Day 02: Amboseli to Lake Naivasha – The Great Rift Valley
After an early breakfast, you’ll depart Amboseli and drive north, descending into the stunning Great Rift Valley to the freshwater oasis of Lake Naivasha.
- Morning: Drive from Amboseli, with stops to photograph the dramatic Great Rift Valley viewpoint.
- Lunch: Arrive at your Lake Naivasha accommodation for lunch.
- Afternoon: Take a relaxing boat ride on the lake, spotting hippos and a stunning variety of birdlife, including fish eagles. You’ll then disembark at Crescent Island for a unique experience: a guided *walking safari* among giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest (no predators).
- Evening: Enjoy dinner at your lodge by the lake.
Day 03: Lake Naivasha to the Maasai Mara
Today you head to the destination of safari legends: the Maasai Mara National Reserve. You’ll travel southwest to the heart of Maasai land, arriving in time for lunch at your new camp.
- Morning: After breakfast, drive from Lake Naivasha, continuing through the floor of the Rift Valley.
- Lunch: Arrive at your camp or lodge in the Maasai Mara and settle in.
- Afternoon: Embark on your first exhilarating game drive in the Mara. The sheer density of wildlife is breathtaking. Be on the lookout for the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino).
- Evening: Return to your camp for dinner and an evening under the vast, starry Mara sky.
Day 04: Full Day in the Magical Maasai Mara
A full day is dedicated to exploring the endless rolling plains of the Maasai Mara. This is your best chance to witness dramatic wildlife encounters, from a lion hunt to a cheetah surveying its territory.
- Morning: Head out for an early game drive, the best time to see predators. You might also opt for a magical hot-air balloon safari (optional, extra cost).
- Lunch: You can choose to have a picnic lunch in the bush to maximize your game-viewing time, or return to the lodge for a rest.
- Afternoon: A second game drive exploring a different part of the reserve, perhaps heading towards the Mara River, the famous crossing point for the Great Migration (seasonal).
- Evening: Enjoy your final safari dinner, sharing stories of the day’s incredible sightings.
Day 05: Farewell Mara, Return to Nairobi
Enjoy one last African sunrise before bidding farewell to the Mara and returning to the city.
- Morning: After an early breakfast, begin your scenic drive back to Nairobi, carrying unforgettable memories.
- Lunch: Arrive in Nairobi around midday. Lunch is on your own account, allowing you to choose a local cafe or restaurant.
- Afternoon: You will be transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) for your departure flight.
